Bundesliga allows Harry Kane exemption to breach obscure regulation amid prolonged title drought
Title Celebrations Briefly Delayed for Harry Kane and Bayern Munich
After a thrilling Bundesliga game, England captain Harry Kane found himself in an unusual position - suspended from the pitch and clinging to the hope of a title win. Unfortunately, for Kane and his teammates at RB Leipzig, things didn't quite go as planned.
Hex Curtains were drawn on Saturday as Leipzig equalized in the last minute of stoppage time, spoiling the Champions League star's chances of lifting his first trophy on the pitch. A last-ditch effort from Yussuf Poulsen made it 3-3, putting the champagne on ice for a few more days.
With Kane watching from the stands, Leipzig stormed to a 2-0 lead in the game, only for Bayern to claw their way back with three second-half goals. Ex-Premier League stalwarts Eric Dier, Michael Olise, and Leroy Sane gave Leipzig a seemingly unassailable position that, had it held, would have meant the title could be wrapped up with two games to spare.
To compound Kane's frustration, Bundesliga rules stipulate that suspended players must stay away from the pitch for 30 minutes before kick-off and after the final whistle. However, according to reports from German newspaper Bild, league officials bent the rules to grant Kane special dispensation to join his teammates in a premature celebration.
The tense and emotional atmosphere was underscored by the heartfelt farewell of Bayern Munich legend Thomas Müller, who played his final match at the Allianz Arena that same night. With fans paying tribute to Müller, Kane's title celebration was somewhat overshadowed, but the occasion remained a historic one for the veteran striker.
Regardless, it wasn't meant to be on this occasion, and Kane's title drought continues. The champions-elect will be officially crowned if Bayer Leverkusen falter in their match against Freiburg on Sunday, and the trophy presentation will take place at Bayern's final home game of the season against Borussia Monchengladbach on May 10.
Despite the dramatic turn of events, Kane can look forward to sharing in the glory within days. And, as for his teammate Eric Dier, speculation is mounting that the midfielder is set to leave Bayern on a free transfer to Monaco this summer.
