Hooligans or pranksters have loosened a hefty art installation in the shape of a massive ball in Detmold, causing it to roll down a street, says local law enforcement in North Rhine-Westphalia. The incident occurred without warning, leaving motorists and pedestrians dumbfounded.
This titanic ball artwork once nestled comfortably on a roundabout but that all changed when a fierce storm destroyed its mountings. Following the storm, the ball was placed in the roundabout's gravel bed and secured with temporary measures such as tension straps, chains, and a construction fence.
As a new mounting couldn't be installed quickly, the city elected to remove the ball using specialized transport at the end of April. Unfortunately, the mysterious loosening of the casual ball-kidnapper happened before then.
With initial investigations underway, police suspect individuals disregarded both traffic safety and property rights by opening the construction fence and tampering with the ball's anchors. The consequences could've been catastrophic, as the ball rampaged its way 50 meters down the street, knocking over a street lamp and a traffic sign.
"This reckless disregard for public safety is intolerable," the mayor lamented. It seems this giant ball's days of rolling free through the winding streets of Detmold may have come to an abrupt and crashing halt.
