Bulldozer Careens into Abyss during Debris Removal in Shimla; Operator Loses Life
Heavy Monsoon Rains Cause Destruction in Himachal Pradesh
Heavy monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in the state of Himachal Pradesh, resulting in widespread destruction and numerous casualties. As of Friday evening, over 400 roads are blocked, and the death toll has reached 179, with 101 deaths directly attributed to natural events like landslides, flash floods, and lightning [1].
The most affected districts include Mandi, Kullu, Chamba, and Lahaul and Spiti. Mandi district has reported the highest toll with 23 rain-related deaths, 14 road accident deaths, 167 blocked roads, and significant utility disruptions [1].
One of the tragic incidents occurred in Shimla, where a bulldozer clearing debris veered off a hillside and tumbled over 300 meters into a deep gorge. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to extract the driver, who was taken to a hospital but succumbed to serious injuries [2]. Footage captured the moment of the accident, showing the bulldozer crashing through multiple road levels as it plunged down.
The ongoing rains have caused power supply disruptions in many places, and nearly 200 water supply systems have been affected. This situation has severely impacted daily life, and emergency responses are ongoing to restore connectivity and essential services [3].
Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla has flagged off three trucks carrying essential relief supplies to flood and landslide-hit areas in Mandi and Kullu. The aid includes tents, blankets, tarpaulins, food items, and other daily-use materials meant for over 1,200 affected families [3]. People have been advised to stay indoors and call 1070 for any emergency help.
National Highway-505 in Lahaul and Spiti remains closed due to landslides and flash floods, cutting off vital access for residents and travelers. This closure has caused serious inconvenience, and efforts are being made to clear the debris and reopen the road [2][3].
The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) reports 184 deaths from June 20 to August 3, 2025. Among these, 103 were directly due to rain-related incidents such as landslides (17), flash floods (8), cloudbursts (17), drowning (20), and electrocution (7). Additionally, 81 deaths occurred in road accidents, often linked to hazardous terrain and damaged roads [1].
The widespread infrastructure damage, affecting roads, power lines, water systems, health infrastructure, and schools, is estimated at over ₹1714.95 crores (₹1,71,495 lakh) [1][3]. The relief supplies are being sent through the State Red Cross Society, and people are urged to stay vigilant and follow safety measures during this critical time.
