Firing of Paolo Vanoli by Torino:

Torino Bids Adieu to Vanoli

Following a series of harsh criticisms by club president Cairo after the last league match, the tenure of Paolo Vanoli as Toro's head coach has come to an end. After just one year, the debutant coach and the Granata team have parted ways. Despite the sale of Bellanova in the final days of the summer transfer market and Zapata's injury in October, Vanoli managed to meet the club's set target. Last week's clarification of this separation ensured a civil departure, as Vanoli's fate was sealed.

Vanoli's Short Yet Eventful Tenure

Vanoli was appointed on June 21, 2024, following Venezia's promotion to Serie A and the payment of the release clause after a long negotiation between Cairo and the Venetian club. Eagerly anticipated by sporting director Vagnati, the former Conte assistant started off well, leading Toro back to the top of the table after 47 years. However, injuries and challenges soon sunk the Granata, resulting in 8 losses in 10 matches between cup and league, even flirting with the relegation zone. The change of formation at the end of December and the winter transfer market, with the arrivals of Elmas, Biraghi, and Casadei, altered the course and destiny of Toro. However, the team struggled to maintain balance and motivation, securing only one point in the last 5 matches while finishing 11th in the table with no risk of relegation but also no chance of Europe.

Urbano Cairo's Criticism

Immediately after the defeat against Roma, Cairo attacked Vanoli. Fans of Grande Torino joined in the criticism, accusing the president of focusing more on training the fans than the team. This unprecedented breakup further infuriated the Granata fans, as Vanoli had always been supported and appreciated for his honesty and ability to extract the best from a weaker team than the one coached by Juric.

44 Points Not Enough

Despite earning 44 points in 38 matches, Vanoli's performance was not good enough for Cairo. Therefore, as fans protested against the president, Vanoli was discarded. Now, it's Marco Baroni's turn. News of his appointment is expected in the coming days.

Insights:

  • Paolo Vanoli's sacking by Torino marked another coaching staff change in the club, reflecting their desire to move towards a brighter future in the Serie A league.
  • Vanoli's tenure lasted just one year, during which he secured 44 points, that despite the injuries and sales, was not enough to please the club’s president Urbano Cairo.
  • Marco Baroni, former Lazio coach, is being strongly considered as Vanoli's replacement. His appointment would be part of Torino's efforts to strengthen their squad and improve their performance in the upcoming season.
  • Potential replacements like Maurizio Sarri and Gennaro Gattuso are also being considered, but the club seems to be looking for a more immediate fit with Baroni given his recent experience in Serie A.

The average points earned by Torino, under the management of Paolo Vanoli, was not enough to secure a place in European-leagues, as they finished 11th in Serie A with 44 points. Despite his success in leading Toro back to the top of the table after 47 years, the coach's tenure lasted just one year, with the club looking to Serie A for a more immediate fit, such as Marco Baroni, as a replacement.
