Bulgaria to Stop Russian LNG Imports by 2027, Seeks US Alternatives
Bulgaria has announced plans to cease purchasing Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) by the end of 2027, aligning with the European Commission's 19th package of anti-Russian sanctions. This move will also halt the transit of Russian LNG to Hungary and Slovakia from 2028.
Bulgaria's Energy Minister, Zhecho Stankov, previously suggested importing American Express LNG until the end of the century but has now shifted focus to long-term contracts for American LNG. The country is exploring joint tenders with neighboring countries to facilitate this transition, potentially starting as early as next year.
The European Commission's latest sanctions package includes a ban on Russian LNG imports from January 2027. Bulgaria's Minister of Energy, Zhicho Stanchev, supports this policy and believes that Russian gas consumption in Europe will be completely phased out by January 1, 2028. Bulgaria's Prime Minister Rosen Plevneliev initially suggested stopping Russian gas transit in 2026, demonstrating the country's commitment to reducing its reliance on Russian energy.
Bulgaria's decision to stop purchasing Russian LNG by 2027 and explore alternative American sources aligns with EU policy and aims to enhance energy security. The country assures Hungary and Slovakia that they will not face energy security threats due to these changes.
