Bülent Ceylan takes on role in Opera - "A Bit of Revolution" - Bülent Ceylan’s Comic Twist on Mozart Shakes Up Berlin’s Opera Scene
Berlin’s State Opera is preparing for a fresh take on Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio this winter. Comedian Bülent Ceylan will step into a leading role, bringing his signature humour to the classic production. The premiere is set for 24 January 2026, with five performances planned to follow.
Ceylan, known for his sharp wit and social commentary, will play Bassa Selim—a role reimagined to include his comedic style. Unlike traditional performances, he will remain on stage for much of the opera, weaving in live commentary and humour. The libretto itself has been adapted to fit his approach, blending Mozart’s music with modern satire.
The production aims to draw in audiences who might not usually attend opera. Ceylan, the son of a German mother and a Turkish father, sees the role as a chance to challenge stereotypes and address contemporary issues. He has called the opportunity a 'huge responsibility' and plans to use humour to tackle Orientalist clichés. Directors have described the collaboration as an 'exciting adventure', hoping Ceylan’s presence will make the centuries-old opera feel fresh and relevant. His involvement marks a bold experiment for the Berlin State Opera, merging high culture with stand-up comedy.
The premiere on 24 January 2026 will test whether comedy can breathe new life into classical opera. If successful, the production could set a precedent for future adaptations. Tickets for the five scheduled performances are expected to draw both opera regulars and newcomers eager to see Ceylan’s take on Mozart.
