Buhari's Conversation with Peter Obi During Campaigning
In a poignant moment of reflection, former presidential candidate Peter Obi recalled the words of late former President Muhammadu Buhari regarding the welfare of Nigeria's vulnerable citizens, during the conclusion of the formal three-day prayers held in Katsina.
The prayers, which took place earlier this week, were attended by top government officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who led the federal government's delegation. Other dignitaries in attendance included Islamic clerics, the former Attorney-General of the Federation, and the Chief of Army Staff.
During his campaign, Obi had the opportunity to meet with Buhari, and the late president's sincerity in appealing for better welfare for the poor left a lasting impression on the former candidate. Obi agreed with public views on Buhari's simplicity and commitment to the poor, and this sentiment was reflected in his own campaign, where he emphasised poverty reduction, education, and security as top priorities.
However, it is important to note that these priorities were presented as part of Obi's own platform rather than being influenced by Buhari's policies. In fact, a review of the search results does not mention any direct advice or policies from Buhari to Obi, regarding caring for the poor. Instead, the focus of Obi's campaign was on linking poverty with insecurity and his emphasis on investing in education, healthcare, and poverty eradication as key solutions, independent of any stated influence from Buhari.
Despite this, Obi remembers Buhari's words about caring for the poor with fondness, and the Islamic clerics are expected to continue with extended prayers for seven more days, in line with Islamic tradition and an agreement between Buhari's family, the Katsina State Government, and the presidency.
Obi, who is known for his emphasis on selfless service to the country, took the opportunity to honour the memory of Buhari and to continue advocating for the welfare of Nigeria's most vulnerable citizens.
