Buffalo Bills' performance against Giants newbie quarterback in his NFL inaugural game (Evaluations)
Buffalo Bills' Preseason Opener Highlights and Lowlights
The Buffalo Bills kicked off their preseason against the New York Giants, showcasing a mix of impressive performances and areas for improvement.
Joey Bosa, the veteran pass rusher making his Bills debut, demonstrated strong pass-rushing ability and rhythm on defense. Bosa participated effectively in 12 snaps, looking healthy and in sync.
Tyrell Shavers, the Bills' receiver, shone with a pair of catches for 70 yards, including a 58-yard return. Shavers also recorded two interceptions, providing big-play capability.
In the absence of James Cook due to a contract dispute, Ty Johnson stepped up, demonstrating his value as a versatile running back. Johnson got the offense going on the team's first scoring drive with three carries for 26 yards.
However, the Bills' defense had some missteps. Tre'Davious White had poor tackling attempts, and Te'Cory Couch whiffed on a short pass play, resulting in a 28-yard catch-and-run for the Giants. Zach Davidson, another tight end for the Bills, had a rough game with two dropped passes.
On the offensive side, Mitch Trubisky, the Bills' backup quarterback, played it safe on the first two drives but started to push the ball down the field more once the Giants went to their backups. Trubisky led with 138 yards and a touchdown, and his ball to new receiver Josh Palmer was an impressive off-balance strike.
In a close competition with fellow backup Mike White, Trubisky came out on top. White threw two touchdown passes but also had a rookie, Jaxson Dart, to contend with. Dart replaced Wilson and completed 12-of-19 passes for 154 yards and one touchdown, including a connection with Lil'Jordan Humphrey in the first quarter.
The Giants converted on five of 10 third downs in the first half, a statistic that will likely be a focus for the Bills' defense moving forward.
Despite the 34-25 preseason loss, the standout performances of Bosa, Shavers, and Johnson provided bright spots for the Bills. The ongoing contract standoff with James Cook may give Johnson more opportunities to showcase his skills over the next few weeks.
Ed Oliver, a defensive tackle for the Bills, had a few pressures and batted down a pass, offering hope for improvements in the defense. Deone Walker, the Bills' fourth-round pick, was a problem for the Giants' offensive line, showing off his impressive get-off for his size and having a pass rush that resulted in a batted-down pass.
As the preseason continues, the Bills will look to build on these performances and address the areas that need improvement.
