Buffalo Bills fire Sean McDermott after nine seasons without a Super Bowl
The Buffalo Bills have dismissed head coach Sean McDermott following a nine-year stint with the team. His departure comes after a Divisional Round playoff loss to the Denver Broncos on 19 January 2026. This move means 10 NFL teams will have new head coaches next season.
McDermott's exit follows a strong run with the Bills, including eight playoff appearances and five AFC East titles. Despite this success, the team never reached the Super Bowl under his leadership, finishing with an 8-8 playoff record.
The decision to dismiss him was made shortly after the 2026 playoff defeat to Denver. General Manager Brandon Beane will now oversee the search for a replacement, though no new head coach has been named yet.
Of the 10 coaching changes across the league, nine were firings—McDermott included. The only exception was Mike Tomlin, who stepped down from the Pittsburgh Steelers of his own accord.
The Bills now face a transition period as they seek a new head coach. McDermott's tenure brought consistent playoff contention but fell short of a Super Bowl. The team's next leader will aim to push Buffalo further in the coming seasons.
