Left Party Tables Avalanche of Amendments to Saxon CDU-SPD Budget Proposal

Budget undergoes extensive adjustments, as detailed in the published update - Budget Proposals by the Commission Include Several Alterations

The Left party is gearing up to lay down a barrage of amendments on the 2025/2026 budget proposal of the Saxon CDU-SPD minority government. Faction leader Susanne Schaper bluntly expressed, "We're not buying this government's proposal, and frankly, we doubt it'll pass muster." The Left is hell-bent on ensuring the state stays intact, especially in trying times.

Taking a hard stance against planned cuts in various sectors

"Our primary focus is on what Saxony needs now. Halting cuts in key areas like democracy promotion, sports, integration, and fire protection ranks top on our list," Schaper emphasized. In a bid to combat galloping rents, funding initiatives for affordable, accessible housing must be boosted substantially.

Additional demands include additional staff at childcare centers, financial boosts to municipalities, hospital investments, aged care support, and improved consumer protection. An essential demand is the ability to secure loans for investments, a point Schaper reiterated.

The CDU-SPD Saxon minority government is ten votes short of a legislative majority. The Left boasts six MPs, the Greens have seven, and the BSW 15. Neither of these parties is planning to blindly back the minority government's 2025/2026 budget proposal.

Key Highlights From the Left's Amendments:

  • Preventing Cuts: The Left Party is determined to block cuts to civil society actors in areas such as democracy support, sports, integration, and fire protection [1].
  • Housing: A priority is to increase funding for affordable, accessible housing in light of escalating rents [1].
  • Childcare Staffing: The party seeks additional staff at daycare centers to improve childcare services [1].
  • Local Authority Support: Financial aid for local authorities to tackle mounting challenges [1].
  • Healthcare Investments: Investments in hospitals and aged care facilities are on the agenda to bolster healthcare services [1].
  • Consumer Protection: The Left calls for strengthened consumer protection measures [1].
  • Loans for Investments: The party insists on securing loans for investments, pressuring the CDU to act [1].

These amendments reflect the Left Party's commitment to tackling societal issues and investing in public services while standing against the budget's proposed austerity measures.
