Trump's economic plan, dubbed as the 'big beautiful bill', is defended by Russ Vought against criticisms by the Congressional Budget Office. Vought is confident that the bill will secure approval in the Senate by July, disregarding fiscal worries.

Budget director of Trump administration claims proposed legislation, labeled as the "big beautiful bill," aims to curb financial deficits and debt by a substantial $1.4 trillion.

The OMB Director Russ Vought fired back at critics who claim the Trump administration's sweeping budget package could add trillions to the national debt, insisting it's a "fiscal responsible" bill.

In an interview with Fox News Sunday, Vought defended the bill, stating it's a "paramount" financially sensible measure. The White House remains optimistic that the bill will reach Trump's desk by July, despite resistance from some Republican senators due to concerns about the potential debt increase.

When asked about the recent rift between Trump and Elon Musk, Vought maintained that the president is leading the administration, while Senatorial alliances may fluctuate. He also highlighted the administration's successful outreach efforts to Senate members to discuss improvements and tweaks to the bill.

The House-passed version of the bill, known as the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," has been estimated by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) to increase the federal deficit by $2.4 trillion over the next decade, with an additional $550 billion in interest payments3. However, Vought argues that this estimate uses an artificial baseline, emphasizing that if tax relief, which was set to expire in 2017, is extended, the bill would actually reduce deficits and debt by $1.4 trillion in the long run[2].

Detractors, like Senators Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.), have voiced concerns about the potential increase to the already massive $36.2 trillion national debt pile1. Yet, Vought insists that the bill is "fiscally responsible."

  3. Amidst the ongoing debate about the bill's potential impact on the national debt, Vought also spoke about the administration's effort to discuss improvements and tweaks to the bill with Senate members, underscoring the significance of policy-and-legislation and the ongoing role of politics in the process.
