News Article: Committee Reshuffle in the Kenyan Parliament

In a series of changes announced by Speaker Moses Wetangula, several members of the Kenyan Parliament have been reassigned to various committees.

The most notable shift occurred within the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee, where Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro was removed and replaced by Mathioya MP Edwin Mugo. Nyoro's vocal criticism of the government's economic policies and perceived disloyalty, particularly during the controversial 2024 impeachment vote of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, were cited as reasons for his removal [1][2].

Nyoro has been reassigned to the Diaspora and Migrant Workers Committee. His previous seat on the Diaspora affairs committee was previously held by Leah Sankaire.

Other changes include Taveta MP John Okano taking over the position previously held by Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku at the Trade committee. Jane Njeri will replace the Hon John Bwire in the Committee on Powers and Privileges. Liza Chelule was moved to the committee on Regional Development, replacing Mary Emaase.

Kiambu Women representative Anne Muratha will take up Njeri's position in the Committee on National Cohesion. Maragua MP Mary Wamaua was placed on the Departmental committee on labour, replacing Nakuru Women representative Liza Chelule. Homa Bay Woman Representative Joyce Bensouda was appointed to the Blue Economy committee.

Charity Kathambi was transitioned to the Committee on Implementation, replacing MP Muthama. Lamu West MP Stanley Muthama was replaced by Njoro MP Charity Kathambi on the Constitutionality Implementation and Oversight Committee (CIOC).

The reshuffle was officially tabled by Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro and ratified by MPs, with the UDA leadership stating that the changes were guided by considerations of regional balance, gender representation, and members’ expertise [1][3]. However, some observers suggest that the underlying motivation is linked to internal party control and sidelining critics [1][2].

Wamaua's placement in the labour committee is viewed as a reward for her newfound loyalty to President Ruto, following her support during the impeachment vote. Nyoro, who has been heavily criticising the Ruto-led regime, has faced backlash for his stance [4].

The Talanta Sports Complex, expected to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, is a project that has been funded by a Sh44.7 billion bond issued by Linzi Finco. However, there have been concerns raised by Nyoro and others about the potential debt burden this could impose on the country, with warnings of a potential cost of Sh100 billion by the time of the maturity of the loan [5].
