Buddy Guy Electrifies NPR's Tiny Desk with Blues Classics and Sinners Soundtrack
Legendary blues musician Buddy Guy recently took the stage at NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series. The performance showcased his signature style, blending raw improvisation with tracks from his long career and the soundtrack of Sinners.
Guy opened the set with Damn Right, I've Got the Blues, the 1991 hit that earned him a gold record in Canada. He also covered Muddy Waters' classic Hoochie Coochie Man, staying true to his blues roots.
The concert featured two songs from Sinners, the 2025 film in which Guy contributed to the soundtrack. He was joined by Miles Caton, the film's star, for I Lied to You—a soulful ballad penned by Raphael Saadiq and Ludwig Göransson, nominated for an Oscar. Their second duet, Travelin', took on a different feel from the film's version, with extended solos and lively exchanges between the two performers.
Between songs, Guy and Caton shared playful banter, adding warmth to the intimate setting. The Tiny Desk performance became a mini-history of blues, from Chicago's electric sound to Guy's modern collaborations.
Guy's career spans decades, marked by albums like Buddy and the Juniors and Live at Legends. He has been inducted into both the Blues Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, performed at the White House, and appeared in the Rolling Stones' documentary Shine a Light.
The Tiny Desk Concert highlighted Buddy Guy's enduring influence on blues music. His performance, blending old favourites with new material, reinforced his status as a living legend. The set also gave listeners a fresh take on the Oscar-nominated I Lied to You.
