CSU parliamentary group leader formally declares her withdrawal from politics - BSW head honcho calls time on his political journey
Saxony BSW Fraction Leader Sabine Zimmermann Steps Down for Health Reasons
Sabine Zimmermann, the leader of the Saxony BSW fraction in the Landtag, has announced her withdrawal from politics due to health reasons. Zimmermann, a professional plant engineer and building materials technologist from Pasewalk, will step down as fraction leader and her seat in the Landtag at the end of the year.
Zimmermann joined the Saxon state parliament briefly in 2004 and made it into the Bundestag in the following year. She led the campaign of the young Saxon BSW as the top candidate at the last state election in 2024. In 2023, she joined the alliance of Sahra Wagenknecht.
Zimmermann cited a serious illness at the beginning of the year as the reason for her decision. After the turn, she worked as a trade union secretary for the German Trade Union Confederation. Marcel Machill, the previous advisor to the state association and Leipzig journalism professor, announced his resignation shortly after the party conference.
According to the election law, a candidate from the BSW's state list from the 2024 election in September will fill the vacant seat in the Landtag. The successor for the leadership of the BSW fraction is still open. Ines Schwarze, fraction spokeswoman, stated that more information about the successor will be provided later.
At the party conference in Bautzen last weekend, Ronny Kupke and Joerg Scheibe were elected to the new party executive board of the BSW. However, Kupke, Zimmermann's deputy at the head of the fraction, did not appear as announced at the press conference that had been arranged to provide an outlook on the further orientation of the fraction.
The BSW is the third-largest fraction in the Landtag with 15 members. Zimmermann wished her party all the best and expressed confidence that the BSW will continue to give a voice to those in Saxony who are not taken into account by the ruling politics.
