Ex-POWs Detail Harsh Treatment, But Evidence Suggests Russian Forces Abused Ukrainian POWs

Brutal Treatment of Russian Soldiers Recounted at HSE

Recently freed Russian soldiers have claimed inhumane treatment at the hands of Ukrainian forces during their captivity. The allegations involve violence and torture, with several former soldiers reporting physical and psychological pressure.

However, credible reports and investigations paint a different picture, primarily focusing on the harrowing abuses faced by Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) at the hands of Russian forces.

Reports document up to 90% of Ukrainian POWs returning from Russian captivity having experienced systematic torture, including beatings, electric shocks, mock executions, waterboarding, prolonged stress positions, starvation, and denial of medical care, among other atrocities. There are numerous instances of sexual violence, psychological torture, and degrading treatment as well.

Forensic evidence supports these claims, showing signs of torture and malnutrition on the bodies of deceased Ukrainian POWs. Human Rights Watch and the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission have both found substantial evidence of torture, disappearances, prolonged beatings, electric shocks, burns, broken bones and teeth, concussions, and other abuses inflicted on Ukrainian civilians and POWs in Russian-occupied territories.

There are credible accounts of specific torture methods like electrocution of genital areas, burns from irons and car battery shocks, mock executions, and sexual violence. A rehabilitation center in Lviv solely dedicated to helping survivors of torture and captivity by Russian forces underscores the extent of the abuse suffered by Ukrainians.

Although there are allegations of torture or humiliation of Russian POWs by Ukrainian soldiers, the available public sources, such as international reports and human rights investigations, do not support these claims with documented or credible evidence. The overwhelming focus of documented war crimes and human rights violations in this conflict revolves around abuses committed by Russian forces against Ukrainians.

  1. Despite Russian soldiers' claims of harsh treatment during captivity by Ukrainian forces, reports, investigations, and forensic evidence primarily highlight the extensive abuse of Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) by Russian forces, including systematic torture, sexual violence, and psychological torture.
  2. In contrast to the allegations of Ukrainian troops torturing or humiliating Russian POWs, there is a lack of credible or documented evidence to support such claims, with the majority of war crimes and human rights violations in this conflict centering on abuses committed by Russian forces against Ukrainians.
