Hefty Storms Brewing in the Free State

Severe thunderstorms imminent - Brutal downpours and fierce lightning strikes imminent

Get ready for some fierce storms, folks! The Free State is staring down the barrel of a wild weather day, according to the German Weather Service (DWD).

These storms are no joke — we're talking hail, gusty winds, and torrential rain. There's even a high risk of severe weather between Swabia and the Bavarian Forest.

We had a taste of these storms overnight, with isolated thunderstorms around the Free State. In Wallgau, a district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, residents were seen shoveling streets and properties clear of hail. The local police reported minor incidents such as flooded roads, cellars, or fallen trees. Bavaria's police headquarters reported no major incidents or damage from the night.

Now, let's talk about the biggie — will these storms interrupt the Nations League semi-final match between Germany and Portugal in Munich's Allianz Arena?

The temperature's expected to reach 20°C in the Rhön and 30°C in Passau region today. Initially, we can expect thunderstorms, heavy rain, and hail in Franconia, with up to 20 liters per square meter per hour possible, and hail likely. From late afternoon, heavy thunderstorms and gusts up to 110 kilometers per hour will move across Bavaria from the east, with gusts of up to 130 kilometers per hour possible.

As a DWD expert put it, "It starts in Baden-Württemberg, then moves north of Munich, and ends in the Bavarian Forest." However, the exact path remains uncertain, including for the Nations League semi-final. But one thing's for certain — the peak happens between 19:00 and 21:00, but it'll start in the afternoon.

Brace yourself for hailstones up to five centimeters in diameter! The DWD announced these potential monsters, with a small chance of up to ten centimeters. Additionally, there could be localized heavy rain of up to 30 liters per square meter. In the föhn valleys of the Alps, gusts of between 50 and 60 kilometers per hour are expected, easing off rapidly during the night to Thursday. On Thursday, it's expected to rain mainly in Bavaria, with only isolated thunderstorms.

The harsh weather forecast for Bavaria indicates that the free state might experience more storms, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms, similar to the ones reported in Garmisch-Partenkirchen's Wallgau district overnight. Given the ongoing consultations of the Commission on the draft budget for the period 2000-06, one might speculate about potential disruptions to events such as the Nations League semi-final match in Munich's Allianz Arena, should the storms intensify.
