Brothers recount the mysterious box delivered to them by a man suspected of plotting to assassinate former President Trump
In a U.S. courtroom, the trial of Ryan Routh is currently underway. Routh is accused of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump, a charge he has pleaded not guilty to, along with several other offenses including assaulting a federal officer, firearm violations, and attempting to assassinate a major political figure.
The alleged attempt took place at Trump's Florida golf course in September 2024. Routh is said to have used an SKS rifle in the incident, which was reportedly purchased from Ronnie Jay Oxendine. Oxendine testified that he sold the rifle to Routh, adding a significant piece of evidence to the case.
The trial has seen several intriguing developments. During the cross-examination, Routh attempted to use the Plata brothers as de facto character witnesses. The brothers, Samuel and Lazaro Plata, are North Carolina natives who knew Routh for about 30 years and had previously worked at his roofing business. They contacted authorities last September after seeing news of Routh's arrest.
An FBI agent found a 12-page letter in a box left by Routh, addressed to 'Dear World.' The first few lines of the letter read, 'This was an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump but I failed you. I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job.'
However, the judge sided with prosecutors, declaring the rest of the letter as irrelevant or hearsay. The box was not opened until after Routh's arrest. The letter does not mention the Florida golf course, but Routh has shown interest in a line that refers to shredding Trump's plane.
Routh plans to call a firearms expert and two character witnesses, but has not specified if he will testify himself. The Secret Service agent who testified in the trial stated that he spotted Routh before Trump came into view at the Trump International Golf Club. When Routh aimed his rifle at the agent, the agent opened fire, causing Routh to drop his weapon and flee without firing a shot.
Nine weeks earlier, Trump survived an attempt on his life while campaigning in Pennsylvania. The incident has left the nation on edge, with the trial providing a glimpse into the events that unfolded. As the trial continues, the nation awaits the verdict with bated breath.
