Hamburg Film Festival Bids Farewell to Long-Term Director with Senate Breakfast

Senator Carsten Brosda of Culture paid homage to Albert Wiederspiel, the long-serving director of the Hamburg Film Festival, with a Senate breakfast before his retirement at year's end. The SPD politician hosted Wiederspiel at the town hall on Monday, as announced by the cultural department.

Wiederspiel's more than two decades of commitment to the festival and the city of Hamburg was commended by Brosda. He and his team successfully positioned the festival's profile on the international stage, bringing numerous vital films to Hamburg and shedding light on pressing subjects.

Wiederspiel will pass on the reins to Malika Rabahallah in the New Year. The Senator admired Wiederspiel's "clear stance," "awareness of global political crises," and "solidarity with filmmakers facing repression and persecution." He appreciated these qualities, especially during the resurgence of Middle Eastern conflicts and rising violence against Jewish individuals in Germany.

Born in Warsaw in 1960, Wiederspiel and his family were forced to leave Poland following anti-Semitic riots, as per cultural authority records.

Under Wiederspiel's leadership, Filmfest Hamburg garnered a notable reputation among film festivals, largely due to his warm hospitality and diverse programming. As a result, the festival's popularity reached an all-time high in 2022.

—"We honor Albert Wiederspiel for his accomplishments and thank him for his exceptional devotion to the film festival and the cultural city of Hamburg," said Brosda.

In his spare time, Wiederspiel enjoyed watching soccer matches of his favorite team in movies. He plans to dedicate more of his leisure hours to movie-watching and maintaining his personal film collection post-retirement.

Wiederspiel's tenure witnessed several significant milestones, such as promoting international films, fostering cultural exchange, recognizing outstanding filmmaking achievements, and engaging with the community.
