BRO's daring snow rescue saves 60 stranded at 10,500 ft in Jammu and Kashmir
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) successfully rescued 60 people trapped in heavy snow at Chatergala Pass in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district. The operation, completed in late January 2026, involved clearing a snowbound 38-kilometre stretch and restoring critical access to the remote area.
The rescue mission began on January 24, led by the 118 Road Construction Company (RCC) of 35 Border Roads Task Force (BRTF). Teams worked to clear five to six feet of snow along the Bhaderwah-Chatergala axis, where the pass sits at an altitude of 10,500 ft. By January 25, the 90 RCC joined the effort, ensuring the road was fully operational by evening.
The operation rescued 20 stranded civilians and 40 soldiers from the 4 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), along with their equipment and supplies. Coordination with the Army allowed for swift evacuation, with the final phase completed in the early hours of January 26. No casualties were reported during the mission.
Beyond rescue efforts, the BRO's work restored vital communication links in the region. The organisation reaffirmed its focus on maintaining infrastructure resilience, operational readiness, and humanitarian support in difficult terrains.
The successful operation at Chatergala Pass highlights the BRO's ability to respond to extreme conditions. All 60 individuals were safely evacuated, and the cleared route ensured continued access to the high-altitude area. The mission underscores ongoing collaboration between the BRO and the Army in challenging environments.
