Ipswich Town and Bromley Battle in EFL Cup Upset
In the first round of the EFL Cup 2025/26, a surprising upset took place as League Two side Bromley defeated Championship team Ipswich Town on penalties, marking Bromley's first-ever advancement to the second round.
The match began with Deji Elerewe scoring for Bromley in the 45th minute, giving the lower-league side the lead. However, Ipswich Town's substitute Ben Johnson equalized eight minutes into the second half, setting the stage for a tense finish.
Despite Ipswich's increased control in the second half, they were unable to score the winning goal, and the game ended 1-1 after 90 minutes. Bromley's goalkeeper, Sam Long, made several key saves during the match and the subsequent shootout to help secure the victory. Marcus Ifill scored the winning penalty for Bromley in the shootout, eliminating Ipswich Town.
Meanwhile, in another exciting match, Wrexham staged a comeback against Hull City. Elliot Lee scored for Wrexham to take the lead, but Hull regained the lead through Joel Ndala and Matt Crooks. Ollie Palmer scored two goals in the 91st and 92nd minutes to send the match into penalties, with Wrexham emerging victorious 5-3.
Elsewhere in the first round, there were numerous other notable results. Accrington Stanley beat Oldham Athletic 3-1, Preston North End won 1-0 over Barrow, and Doncaster Rovers recorded a 4-0 win over Middlesbrough. Bradford City also progressed by beating Blackburn Rovers 2-1.
