Brokenhearted offspring of slain Minnesota legislator Melissa Hortman lament, "We are profoundly grief-stricken."

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the kids of Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman, Sophie and Colin, are grieving the brutal loss of their parents, who were allegedly gunned down by a man impersonating a cop.

"Our world is shattered by the loss of our phenomenal parents, Melissa and Mark," the Hortmans said in a statement, their pain evident. "They were the radiant stars in our lives, and we can hardly fathom their absence. Their love for us was immeasurable. We miss them incredibly."

The suspected predator, 57-year-old Vance Boelter, was apprehended on Monday following a grueling two-day manhunt. Boelter is being linked to a series of politically-motivated shootings that claimed the lives of the Hortmans, and wounded Minnesota Democratic state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.

"Our family extends our utmost gratitude to the law enforcement officers for their swift action, which saved others and for the extraordinary cooperation among local communities that led to the arrest of the maniac who murdered our parents," the statement from the Hortman family affirmed. "We are particularly appreciative of the brave officers who attempted heroically to rescue our parents at their home."

According to reports, Boelter showed up at the lawmakers' doors donning a police uniform and a lifelike mask. Investigators discovered notebooks in his vehicle containing a list of 70 elected officials—a chilling reminder of his villainous plans.

Boelter reportedly visited the residences of two additional lawmakers on the night of the shootings, but both were absent at the time. Police made contact with one of these lawmakers' homes, prompting Boelter to flee the scene.

"This devastating incident serves as a call for unity," the Hortman family implored. " cherish your loved ones closely, practice empathy, and treat each other with compassion. The most fitting tribute to our parents' memories is for us to make an effort, be it big or small, to uplift our community for someone else."

The family suggested numerous ways to express this tribute, such as visiting a favorite park, petting a furry friend, and cracking a dad joke in honor of their pet dog, Gilbert, who tragically lost his life in the shooting.

The Hoffmans, the other surviving victims, expressed gratitude for the support pouring in from across the state and the nation, as they continue their road to recovery.

This harrowing incident underscores escalating concerns about the potential for politically-motivated attacks on government representatives and advocates, as the nation grapples with the gravity of such events[1][3][4].

In the midst of this tragic, politically-motivated attack, the country grapples with the gravity of war-and-conflicts and crime-and-justice that have infiltrated the fabric of our society. The Hortman family's heart-wrenching loss serves as a call for increased general-news coverage and discussions on politics, aiming to foster a more unified and compassionate community. Remembrance takes many forms, from paying tribute to fallen heroes like Gilbert, the family's beloved pet dog, to simply practicing empathy in daily interactions, thereby ensuring the legacy of justice and love lives on.
