Broadway Musical 'The Baker's Wife' to be headed by Ariana DeBose; Aubrey Plaza set for stage return, and other developments
In the world of theatre, there's always something new and exciting to look forward to. Here's a round-up of some upcoming productions and returning favourites that are sure to delight theatre enthusiasts.
Firstly, fans of musicals will be thrilled to know that "Heathers: The Musical" is set to have a special one-night-only celebration called "Big Fun Day" on Sept. 1 at New World Stages. This musical, loosely based on the 1989 cult film, has developed a devoted cult following through cast albums and regional productions.
Speaking of musicals, the 1976 production of The Baker’s Wife is making a comeback. Based on the 1938 French film La Femme du Boulanger by Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono, this musical features songs by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Joseph Stein. The story, set in a provincial French village, revolves around the impact of a new baker and his much younger wife on the town and the unraveling of the community’s dynamics. Ariana DeBose, Academy Award winner, will headline the 2025-26 season opener of Classic Stage Company, starring as Geneviève in the first full-scale New York production of the musical since its 1976 premiere.
Meanwhile, Aubrey Plaza will return to the New York stage this fall in the world premiere of "Let's Love!," a trio of one-act comedies by Ethan Coen. Plaza, who made her stage debut in a 2023 Off-Broadway revival of John Patrick Shanley's "Danny and the Deep Blue Sea," is no stranger to the stage.
Fans of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical "Hamilton" will be pleased to know that the stage-filmed version of the show will be released in movie theatres on Sept. 5, 2025. The film includes a prologue titled "Reuniting the Revolution," featuring fresh interviews with the original Broadway cast and creative team.
The "Heathers" musical has also had a successful run, leading to a hit London production, a 2022 film capture, and its Off-Broadway return. Despite closing on tour before reaching Broadway, the musical's score produced the much-recorded ballad "Meadowlark."
Lastly, it's worth noting that Ethan Coen has an enduring partnership with the Atlantic Theater Company, as they produced his earlier collections of one-acts.
In other news, the opening of "Let's Love!" was delayed by a strike that rocked the Atlantic earlier this year and resulted in the postponement of multiple productions. The producers of "Heathers: The Musical" have recently asked fans to refrain from making bootleg videos of the current Off-Broadway production. The "Big Fun Day" event is a nod to the show's devoted fan base, known as the "Corn Nuts."
As always, the world of theatre promises a wealth of exciting new productions and returning favourites. Stay tuned for more updates!
