Broadcasting rights for Scottish football have been expanded by Sky Sports.
Sky Sports Extends Partnership with SPFL, Expands Coverage of Scottish Football
In a significant move for Scottish football, Sky Sports has extended its agreement with the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL), securing broadcast rights until 2029. This deal marks a new era for both the SPFL and the Scottish Women's Premier League (SWPL), as Sky Sports becomes an official partner and title sponsor of the SWPL League Cup for the next seven seasons.
Under the new terms, Sky Sports customers will have unparalleled access to live football action every week of the season. For the first time, viewers will be able to watch SWPL matches, with live fixtures from the league set to be broadcast starting from this season.
Sky Sports will also be increasing its presence at cinch Premiership grounds, broadcasting live from each ground up to five occasions each season, one more than in the current deal. This increased coverage will allow more football fans than ever before to enjoy live matches.
In addition to live matches, Sky Sports will offer a dedicated weekly highlights show on Sky Sports Football, providing viewers with a round-up of the week's action. The broadcaster will also continue to provide the latest news, exclusive interviews, results, and best stories from both leagues through Sky Sports News.
The extended partnership between Sky Sports and the SPFL will continue to bring the biggest games to viewers, with an increase in the number of live matches shown. All cinch Premiership clubs can sell Pay-Per-View (PPV) streams within the UK and Ireland of up to five league home games per season, subject to certain conditions.
The deal represents an important step towards the SPFL's target of paying fees to member clubs of £50million per season. SWPL Managing Director, Fiona McIntyre, comments that the deal brings significant financial investment to the new leagues and enhances the visibility of the SWPL at a crucial time for the game.
Neil Doncaster, the SPFL CEO, states that the agreement is a significant financial and promotional deal for the league, providing a major financial boost to its 42 member clubs. He adds that the deal allows SWPL clubs to invest further and will put the SWPL on the map as one of the most progressive women's leagues in the world.
Stephen van Rooyen, Sky's EVP and CEO UK and Europe, comments on the extended partnership with the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL), stating more football fans will have access to live matches than ever before. He also recognizes the value and potential of the SWPL, stating that Sky Sports will be a key partner for the league as it enters into a new era.
The official partner of the SWPL and title sponsor of the SWPL League Cup for the next seven seasons is Barclays. With this extended partnership, Sky Sports is poised to continue its commitment to Scottish football, providing comprehensive coverage and enhancing the fan experience for years to come.
