In a surprising turn of events, Jason George, known for his role in the spin-off "Seattle Firefighters", is making a permanent comeback to the original series "Grey's Anatomy" in its 21st season.

The new season of "Grey's Anatomy" kicked off on German TV on July 21, 2025. However, the private broadcaster ProSieben removed the medical drama from its primetime schedule in mid-August, likely due to a shift in licensing and distribution agreements involving Paramount Global Content Distribution and ProSieben Sat.1's strategic programming. The emphasis on the NCIS franchise seems to have been the primary reason for this change, as ProSieben and its streaming service Joyn recently signed a new content distribution deal with Paramount Global focusing on NCIS and its spin-offs.

Despite its absence from ProSieben's primetime, "Grey's Anatomy" continues to be aired on other networks like TF1 Séries Films, where episodes are scheduled for August 2025.

Ellen Pompeo, who played the lead character Meredith Grey, has been appearing in guest roles and serving as the narrator for the series, even after her series exit in season 19. Unfortunately, the 21st season has seen several cast changes, with Jake Borelli and Midori Francis departing. Borelli, who played Levi Schmitt, and Francis, who portrayed Mika Yasuda, have both left the show.

Despite the changes, "Grey's Anatomy" remains a popular series in the US. Jason George will reprise his role as Ben Warren, a character he played in the spin-off "Seattle Firefighters", starting from season 21.

The new season has been available on the streaming portal Disney+ for some time. ProSieben will air a movie instead of "Grey's Anatomy" in primetime, and the medical drama will start its triple pack later at different times.

Despite the lower viewership in Germany, "Grey's Anatomy" continues to captivate audiences worldwide with its compelling storylines and unforgettable characters. The industry service "DWDL" reports that the market share in the target group of 14 to 49-year-olds for the new season has sometimes been less than two percent.
