After completing an apprenticeship as a publisher with the Axel Springer publishing house, he dove headfirst into journalism, starting with a two-year stint at the Cuxhavener Allgemeine newspaper and four years hammering away in the trenches of the Hamburger Abendblatt. His thirst for adventure and experience led him to Buenos Aires for a three-year spell as a correspondent for the Springer Foreign Service (SAD).

In 1971, he joined the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), where he continued his journey in journalism for an astonishing 50 years.
