Artist Kohei Nawa Announces Plans for Los Angeles Retail and Exhibition Space

Japanese contemporary artist Kohei Nawa, known for his innovative sculptures and mixed media art, is set to expand his influence in the art world with a new project in Los Angeles. Nawa, founder and director of SANDWICH, a creative platform for contemporary art, design, and architecture projects, is developing a plan for a retail and exhibition space in the city[1].

Nawa, born in Osaka, Japan, in 1975, received his MFA and PhD in Fine Arts from the Kyoto City University of Art[2]. He later studied sculpture at the Royal Academy of Art in the United Kingdom[1]. Nawa's career has been marked by international exhibitions and notable contributions to contemporary sculpture and mixed media art.

One of Nawa's signature sculpture works involves encapsulating taxidermied deer and other motifs in glass spheres or PixCells[3]. His art frequently features themes of transformation and sensory perception, often utilizing unusual materials and techniques to challenge how viewers engage with form and surface[1]. His background in both Japanese and Western art education has influenced a hybrid aesthetic in his works.

Recently, five of Nawa's works were available for collection at The Shop at The Broad[4]. His "PixCell-Deer#24" is part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's permanent collection[3].

In February, Nawa offered an exclusive talk in partnership with our website and The Broad[4]. The event, held from February 28 to March 5, provided a unique opportunity for art enthusiasts to gain insights into Nawa's creative process and vision.

Nawa currently lives and works in Kyoto[2]. His art intersects with various disciplines, as seen in his collaboration on product design, such as designing the label artwork for the wine brand T’Spot associated with the Korean celebrity T.O.P[5].

For those interested in specific titles or detailed analysis of Nawa's artworks, additional specialized art sources would be recommended.

The new retail and exhibition space planned by Kohei Nawa in Los Angeles will showcase a fusion of art, design, and architecture, offering a unique platform for entertainment and contemporary exhibition. With his innovative sculptures and mixed media art pieces, such as encapsulating taxidermied deer in PixCells, Nawa continues to challenge conventional perceptions of form and surface, reflecting his hybrid artistic background.
