Preparing for a Powerful Show of Solidarity

On the 80th anniversary of Victory in World War II, Ukrainian servicemen are set to participate in a grand military parade in London on May 5, 2025. This announcement was made by the UK Ministry of Defence, as reported by Sky News. Approximately 1,000 British servicemen, along with their Ukrainian counterparts, will take part in the event, including the Royal Navy, Royal Marine Commandos, British Army, Royal Air Force, and even some cavalry units and military bands. This display will symbolize global support for Ukraine and its ongoing battle against Russia's aggression.

In the words of UK Defense Secretary John Healey, "Eighty years after Victory Day, we will honor our war veterans, our greatest generation... It is fitting that the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who are currently fighting on the front lines for freedom, are represented at the event on Monday."

The Ukrainian military personnel today in the UK are part of a training program designed to prepare VSU recruits. Launched in summer 2022, this program, called Operation Interflex, has already trained over 54,000 VSU soldiers with the help of 12 partner countries, including the UK.

Though Victory Day in World War II is traditionally commemorated on May 8 in the UK, the US, and other European countries, the parade in London will pay tribute to the event on May 5. Meanwhile, in Moscow, Russia, a traditional parade will also take place on Red Square on May 9. Military personnel from various countries, including those involved in the military operation in Ukraine, will participate in this event as well.

As the date for the military parade in London approaches, tension between Ukraine and Russia continues. Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a ceasefire in the conflict from midnight on May 8 to midnight on May 11. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed an immediate 30-day full ceasefire. Despite this proposal, the Kremlin has criticized it as manipulation, reminding of Putin's past statements about generally supporting the idea of a 30-day ceasefire, but expressing concerns about Ukraine's potential use of this time.
