British sailing clubs officially designated as Part of the British Sailing Development Programme

The British Sailing Pathway is expanding with the introduction of the Pathway Club scheme, a new programme designed to identify and develop affordable, excellent sailing and coaching for junior racers. This initiative aims to create an environment where young sailors can develop a lifelong love of the sport while nurturing talent and providing clear pathways to competitive sailing success.

The Pathway Clubs, recognised annually, are committed to high-quality junior coaching and structured development opportunities in line with British Sailing’s pathway. They focus on accessible youth sailing programs that foster skill development and competitive potential in juniors.

Benefits for Clubs

By becoming part of the RYA's British Sailing Pathway Club program, clubs can access a national framework supporting junior sailing development, receive support for affordable, high-quality coaching, enhance their club reputation as a recognised development hub for young sailors, and develop junior sailors towards competitive racing and beyond.

Requirements for Clubs

To join the program, clubs must deliver excellent coaching aligned with RYA standards focused on juniors, provide structured sailing programs that support progression and skill development, and commit to developing young sailors with the potential for performance racing.

The First Wave of Pathway Clubs

The RYA has awarded the Pathway Club status to the first clubs, including Delph Sailing Club, Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club, West Lancashire Yacht Club, Winsford Flash Sailing Club, Ripon Sailing Club, Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club, Northampton Sailing Club, Nottinghamshire County Sailing Club, Royal Hospital School, Snettisham Beach Sailing Club, and Waldringfield Sailing Club. Over 40 more clubs across the UK are currently being reviewed for Pathway Club status.

A Network of High-Quality Clubs

The initiative aims to develop a network of high-quality clubs across the UK for young racers to develop skills and feel part of a team. This network will provide a fun racing environment closer to home, reducing the need for young sailors to travel long distances for training. The Pathway Clubs will also champion exceptional coaching and junior racing, and benefit from expert mentoring and resources.

This programme is part of the RYA's evolution of the British Sailing Pathway, working with motivated and excellent junior clubs to deliver a good spread across both geography and the classes they support. It will help drive quality delivery more locally to sailors, reducing the financial and time cost for young sailors and their families.
