HMS Prince of Wales Makes Historic Visit to Australia

The Royal Navy's aircraft carrier, HMS Prince of Wales, has made a significant visit to Australia, marking the first time in a generation that a British aircraft carrier has graced its shores. This visit is part of the UK Carrier Strike Group's global mission, which has seen the carrier operating in the Indo-Pacific region for the past couple of weeks.

HMS Prince of Wales, a 65,000-ton aircraft carrier, took over as the UK's flagship on December 1, 2022, and has since led the UK Carrier Strike Group into the Mediterranean. The carrier has also been operating in conjunction with the USS George Washington carrier group at times.

During its deployment to the Indo-Pacific, HMS Prince of Wales made a stop in Tokyo Bay on August 28, 2025, and more recently, it sailed into Darwin, Australia. The ship has spearheaded the UK's naval input into Talisman Sabre 2025, a military exercise involving 35,000 personnel from 19 nations. The exercise extends from Darwin to Brisbane and also includes Papua New Guinea.

The nations participating in Talisman Sabre 2025, besides the lead countries United States and Australia, include at least 13 other nations, with the Bundeswehr (Germany) confirmed to contribute around 200 soldiers. Other specific countries are not fully listed in the available results, but the exercise traditionally includes allies and partner nations from the Indo-Pacific region.

The ship's company were treated to a traditional 'Welcome to Country' ceremony by the native Larrakia people upon their arrival in Darwin. The US Marine Corps has also flown their MV-22 Osprey aboard the flagship's flight deck. More USMC personnel and F-35B jets are expected to join later in the deployment.

This visit to Australia is a significant milestone in the history of HMS Prince of Wales, as it has been designated as the UK's flagship for the first time in its five-year career. The carrier has demonstrated its capabilities and commitment to the region, making it an essential player in the Indo-Pacific.
