BC Faces Critical Wildfire Situation as Over 130 Active Fires Rage

British Columbia is currently grappling with more than 130 active wildfires, following a surge caused by recent lightning storms. Since Wednesday, over 35,000 lightning strikes have ignited 65 new fires, many of which are near communities in the Interior, Fraser Canyon, and on Vancouver Island [1][2][5].

The BC Wildfire Service has imposed Category 2 and 3 open fire restrictions province-wide, with campfire bans on the coast to try to contain the situation [3]. Despite a predicted cooler weather trend and light precipitation due to a passing cold front, meteorologists indicate that active weather including further lightning could continue into early weekend, potentially sparking more fires [1].

One of the active fires is near Cameron Lake, which is burning aggressively in difficult to access terrain and has been measured at just under a square kilometre in size [4]. The Nanaimo Regional District on Vancouver Island has declared a state of local emergency due to this wildfire. Homes on the north side of Cameron Lake have been ordered evacuated, while other nearby properties have been put on evacuation alert [2].

Another significant fire is south of Lytton, B.C., which has been measured at just over 12-square kilometres in size. The wildfire is highly visible from Highway 1, and an evacuation order issued by the Lytton First Nation remains in place due to this wildfire [4].

Despite these challenges, there is some positive news. Emelie Peacock, an information officer with the BC Wildfire Service, stated that a week of dry and hot weather combined with lightning led to many new fire starts. However, she also mentioned that the cooling trend and showers "are going to help us out," but the province isn't "completely out of the woods yet" [1].

The blaze near Peachland has been classified as being held and is no longer out of control [6]. Residents who were evacuated due to a wildfire near Peachland were allowed to return home on Friday [7].

As the wildfire season is now fully underway, especially in southern parts of the province, the BC Wildfire Service advises that the wildfire risk environment remains dynamic and ongoing [2][5]. Residents are urged to stay informed and follow any evacuation orders or alerts issued by local authorities.
