The ASA targeted the airline's slogan, "Fly more sustainably," which accompanied its "Green Fares" option. The company argued that the offer reduced some environmental impact during flights. However, the watchdog pointed out that Lufthansa's explanation for this claim was sketchy at best, leading to the ban.

Lufthansa's Response to the Ban

Lufthansa addressed the ban by confirming that it would drop the "Fly more sustainably" slogan from future advertisements. The decision came as a response to the concerns raised by the ASA.

A similar ban was imposed on Air France and Etihad's ads that appeared in the UK's search engine in July. Both airlines had adverts emphasizing their environmental commitments. The ASA shared the same rationale for their decisions, concluding that the airlines' basis for making such claims wasn't clear or substantiated.

The challenges airlines face when promoting sustainable flying through advertising extend beyond just the UK. Strict regulations and guidelines are already in place in the European Union (EU) to ensure that airlines present clear and accurate information on their eco-friendly practices.

International and European regulations like ReFuelEU Aviation, CORSIA, EU ETS, and advertising guidelines aim to prevent misleading talk of carbon emissions reduction. In addition, guidelines emphasize the importance of transparency, accuracy, and compliance in airlines' sustainability declarations.

The recent spate of advertisement bans serves as a reminder for airlines to stay within legal boundaries. Regulatory actions and public backlash can result from deceptive or exaggerated claims.
