Britain dispatches aircraft to Poland after Russian intrusion
In response to a series of aviation incursions over Polish and Romanian airspace, the United Kingdom has announced its participation in NATO Operation "Eastern Sentry." This joint operation, which also includes France, Germany, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Italy, Spain, and Sweden, aims to bolster air defense efforts in the region.
Last week, multiple Russian drones crossed into Polish airspace, marking the most significant violations since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. These incursions prompted NATO to send fighter jets to shoot down the drones, according to reports.
The UK, along with Poland, Romania, Ukraine, and its NATO allies, has strongly condemned these actions. In a statement, the UK warned that any further incursions will be met with force. The Foreign Office described the incursions as "unacceptable."
The British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, expressed concern over Russia's continued aggression towards Ukraine and stated that Russia's reckless behavior is a direct threat to European security and a violation of international law. He reaffirmed the UK's commitment to support NATO's efforts to bolster its eastern flank through Eastern Sentry.
In line with this commitment, the UK's military announced that Royal Air Force fighter jets would join several other European nations in air-defense missions over Poland. The Typhoon jets will join planes from Denmark, France, and Germany in the mission named Eastern Sentry.
On Saturday, Romania reported another incursion into its airspace, with two F-16 jets deployed to intercept a drone. Similarly, the UK announced it would send fighter jets to help defend Polish airspace.
However, it's worth noting that the drone did not fly over inhabited areas and did not represent an imminent danger to the public. Despite this, the UK summoned the Russian ambassador in London on Monday in response to Russia's "unprecedented violation" of NATO airspace.
Interestingly, these significant violations have not occurred in any other NATO nation, making the incidents over Polish and Romanian airspace particularly concerning. As tensions continue to rise, the international community remains vigilant, with the UK and its allies standing united in their commitment to uphold peace and security in the region.
