Britain Braces for First Widespread Frost and Snow of Autumn

Autumn has arrived in Britain, bringing with it the first widespread frosts of the season. The Met Office predicts a chilly start to Tuesday, with icy patches expected across the country. In rural Scotland, temperatures could plummet to as low as -8°C.

The cold snap is due to a 'cold northerly airflow' moving in after heavy showers. This will cause temperatures to fall to the low single figures across the country on Thursday and Friday nights. In areas of higher ground in northern England, snow is likely on Tuesday, although it is expected to be 'fairly shortlived' and melt on Wednesday.

The cold weather is set to continue into the weekend. Overnight lows of 1°C or 2°C are expected even in towns and cities, with temperatures dropping to freezing in areas of the Pennines as far south as the Peak District. The lowest temperatures, down to -1°C, are expected in north Pennine areas.

The Met Office warns of icy conditions returning, with widespread frost and even snow hitting parts of the country early this week. Motorists are advised to take extra care on roads, and residents should prepare for colder nights ahead.
