Brightness of Hurricane's Morning Break
On a blustery January 3, 2018, Pforzheim experienced the brunt of storm Burglind, reaching a staggering category 12 on the Beaufort scale. The storm brought a deluge of heavy rain and gusts of wind reaching up to 120 km/h, causing a flurry of minor incidents across the city.
The storm's ferocity was evident as barriers at construction sites, such as those on Poststraße and Kelterstraße, were toppled over. A broken bus stop canopy flew through the Schuetzle Underpass, and a strip of it broke off at the same location. Drivers were urged to exercise caution, with large puddles forming throughout the city, potentially causing vehicles to splash passing pedestrians.
The German Weather Service had issued warnings ahead of the storm, predicting gusts of up to 120 km/h in exposed areas. However, the winds were not limited to these zones, as they also reached speeds between 80 and 100 km/h in other parts of the city.
The storm's wrath was not limited to infrastructure, as an uprooted tree in the Rod district damaged a resident's garden fence and vehicle. Trash cans, recycling bins, and yellow bags were also moved unexpectedly throughout the city.
Despite the minor chaos, the city's municipal employees were quick to respond. They began cleaning clogged gutters and drains in the city as early as the morning following the storm.
