Brienz Village Braces for Worsening Rock Hazard as Rain Threatens
Brienz, a village in Grisons, faces a worsening hazard due to a rapidly destabilizing rock formation. Heavier rainfall forecast for Sunday could exacerbate the situation, potentially making the village inaccessible in the coming weeks.
The rock ridge above the debris slope has been accelerating at speeds of up to 65 centimeters per day. However, recent measurements show a slight decrease to around 45 centimeters per day. Despite this, further rock collapses are expected.
A rockfall occurred onto the debris slope in the night from October 26 to 27, further deteriorating the hazard. The early warning service now decides daily whether access to the village will be possible due to the unpredictable situation. This has led to more irregular access for evacuees returning to the village.
The two farms in Brienz have already relocated their livestock to winter quarters outside the village due to the uncertain conditions. If entry is permitted on Saturday, residents are advised to use the day for necessary winter preparations.
The hazard situation in Brienz remains critical, with the unstable rock formation posing a significant threat. While the movement of the ridge has slowed, further collapses are expected. The early warning service will continue to assess access daily, and residents are advised to stay prepared.
