In the early hours of June 1, chaos ensued as bridges crashed in Bryansk and Kursk regions. The mayhem kicked off a series of terrorist acts, as reported by Alexander Bastrykin at a meeting with President Putin.
The first horror struck Bryansk Oblast at 10:33 PM on May 31. Three explosive devices detonated along the Vygonichi-Pilshino railway section, destroying a vital automobile bridge. The wreckage slammed onto a packed train, No. 86 Klimentovo - Moscow, claiming seven lives and seriously injuring 122 passengers. Investigators traced the bomb's locations, estimating their explosive power to be around 15 kg of TNT equivalent.
As day broke on June 1, another tragedy hit Kursk Oblast. Locomotive, three empty carriages of a freight train plummeted off the rails after an explosion on the Ostapovo - Mikhailovsky Rudnik stretch. The impact left the locomotive driver and two assistants injured. Investigators uncovered that five homemade explosive devices had been detonated on the railway tracks and under the bridge.
Just as the dust settled, another explosion rocked Bryansk Oblast in the morning. The blast was strategically timed to detonate on a diagnostic complex locomotive, causing extensive damage.
Alexander Bastrykin confirmed that the Russian Investigative Committee had labeled these events as terrorist acts. The Railway Company (RZD) has already doled out 36.5 million rubles to the affected families. To illustrate, RZD will pay 2.2 million rubles to families of the deceased, 1 million to those critically injured, 500,000 to those with medium and minor injuries, and 100,000 to passengers who sought medical attention.
