Broken Down: Another Part of Carolabridge Collapses - Bridge Demolition Underway: Carola Bridge Being Torn Down

The unguarded dance of destruction on Dresden's Carol Bridge continues, as its remaining pillars gracefully succumbed to the demo crew's relentless onslaught. The remnants of tracks A and B now rest at ease on the cushions made of 13,000 tons of riverbed material.

The aftermath is scheduled to be tackled by a task force of up to ten excavators and five trucks, working tirelessly, six days a week to clear the debris accumulated during this demolition ballet. Their goal? A complete eradication of the Carol Bridge by the New Year's Eve bell.

A Dazzling Dance of the Demolition Goliaths

The curtains lifted this morning, as the starring performers of the demolition delivery – a 120-ton long-arm excavator armed with a 40-meter extension and a 70-ton companion equipped with a 25-meter boom – brought the curtain call for tracks A and B one step closer.

First, they sent the asphalt and concrete of the roadway soaring into the air, then unveiled the hidden taut wires, which they swiftly severed with their powerful shears. By mid-afternoon, track A collapsed, followed by track B a few hours later, caused by a climactic combination of their structural undermining and gravity's relentless pull.

Disintegrating Dream into Dust: A Ten-Week Odyssey

The third lane of the Carol Bridge experienced a sudden, dramatic collapse over approximately 100 meters during the night of September 10-11 last year, marking the beginning of the end. Since then, this sentinel of the DDR era has been kept under observation.

Specialists predict the dismantling of the bridge's iconic middle section will take a ten-week odyssey. The Elbe in Dresden will be locked down for maritime traffic during this period, transforming it into a serene, traffic-free south German lake.

The Commission, in its demolition spectacle, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, perhaps in the sports-betting industry that flourishes near the bustling banks of Dresden's Elbe. The aftermath of the historic bridge demise will require a meticulous debris removal, comparable to tackling the excavation needed post the Dresden Elbe's traffic-free south German lake transformation.
