Bridge collapses in Brno and Kursk regions declared as acts of terrorism by the Supreme Court
In a shocking turn of events, the Russian Investigative Committee has officially classified the bridge collapses that occurred in the Bryansk and Kursk regions on June 1, 2025, as terrorist acts.
The initial incident took place on the Unecha-Zhecha section in the Bryansk region, where an explosion caused damage to the track at 10:52 AM Moscow time. Remarkably, the track measurement train passing on the same section escaped unscathed. However, a passenger train was not so fortunate, with the collapse of a bridge crushing the train, resulting in the death of seven people, including the train driver, and injuring over 100.
A freight train was also derailed in the aftermath, causing additional damage but no casualties. In a separate incident in the Kursk region, another bridge collapse caused a freight train to derail onto a road.
Recovery efforts were swift, with the destroyed overpass in the Kursk region being rebuilt and reopened by late July 2025. The new structure is higher than the previous one to accommodate oversized vehicles.
The Investigative Committee is treating the incidents as potential terrorist attacks, initially describing the collapses as caused by explosions but later editing official statements, removing explicit mentions of explosions without explanation.
The unexploded bomb found under a bridge on the stretch between Unecha and Zhecha stations in the Bryansk region consisted of approximately 10 kg of plastic explosive C-4 of American origin. Bomb disposal experts from Rosgvardiya successfully defused the device.
Investigations are ongoing, but the Investigative Committee has stated that Ukraine organized the explosions. It's important to note that no publicly available information provides specific identified perpetrators or further concrete details beyond the classification of the attacks as terrorism.
These events occurred amid ongoing military tensions near the Russia-Ukraine border, with increased security concerns along these regions. Russian authorities have warned residents in Bryansk, Kursk, and Belgorod against potential security threats, including intelligence gathering through online means.
