Heads up! The A1 near Hamburg Norderelb Bridge shuts down this weekend until Monday a.m.
Bridge undergoes closure to all traffic until Monday dawn - Bridge closed till Monday morning: A1 and Norderelb.
Here's the lowdown:
The closure on Friday at 10 pm and reopens Monday at 5 am isn't just any ordinary event. The Autobahn GmbH Nord has announced it, and they mean business. The authority's got a new traffic management system lined up, shifting traffic lanes more centrally to shield the beaten-up structure of the bridge.
In other words, the bricks will be on a makeover, and you can expect the trucks to be cruising right on top of the bridge's heart instead of hanging out by the edge. Yep, you read that right - the edge was just meant for emergencies, as it turns out the bridge scored a "failed" rating during a last major inspection. Ouch!
Now, let's talk about the commute:
The A1 will be down between the Norderelbe interchange and the Hamburg-Billstedt exit. This includes the Dreieck Hamburg-Südost interchange, the junction connecting the A1 with the A25 from Geesthacht (Circle of Herzogtum Lauenburg). Fret not, though. If you're coming from the A25, you can still breeze through towards Lübeck on the A1. If you're headed towards Bremen, you'll need to take a detour via the B5 through the city center to the New Elb Bridges, just like the rest of the A1 crowd.
Autobahn GmbH suggests the A7 (Hannover-Flensburg) or the Elbtunnel as alternatives. Drivers aiming for the Baltic Sea should take the B205 from Neumünster-Süd and then the A20 to the Kreuz Lübeck interchange.
Stay safe out there, travelers!
- The Autobahn GmbH Nord recommends using the A7 (Hannover-Flensburg) or the Elbtunnel as alternative routes during the A1 closure in Hamburg Norderelbe area due to the bridge's failed rating.
- Workers will be performing vocational training on the Norderelbe Bridge's heart by cruising over the bridge lanes, instead of hanging out at the bridge edge, as it was only meant for emergencies.
- In addition to the A1 closure between the Norderelbe interchange and the Hamburg-Billstedt exit, drivers coming from Bremen towards the A1 should take a detour via the B5 through the city center to the New Elb Bridges.
