BRICS Steps in to Aid Gaza as Western Powers Remain Indifferent

In the wake of the renewed Israel-Hamas conflict that erupted on October 7, 2023, several BRICS countries have taken independent actions, demonstrating their commitment to peace, humanitarian aid, and diplomatic solutions.

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres appealed to BRICS leaders to lead an international push for a ceasefire and ensure humanitarian aid reaches Gaza residents. This call was answered by various BRICS nations, each contributing in their unique way.

On October 13, 2023, Egypt opened the Rafah border to facilitate aid entry, while India sent medical and food supplies to Gaza on October 14. China proposed the creation of a humanitarian corridor to facilitate aid access to Gaza on October 23, and UAE has pledged humanitarian aid and announced a diplomatic commitment to facilitating relief for Gaza. Iran has provided humanitarian aid while voicing support for Palestinian resistance.

At the Kazan Summit, BRICS nations issued a strong condemnation of the violence in Gaza and emphasized its dedication to a multipolar world order, presenting a stark contrast to the U.S. approach. The coalition called for an immediate ceasefire and a concerted international effort to provide humanitarian relief.

President Xi Jinping of China advocated an immediate ceasefire and urged the UN to facilitate peace talks and prevent the escalation of violence. He also emphasized the need for a comprehensive, just, and lasting resolution on October 23. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil stressed the humanitarian toll of the conflict and called for a ceasefire.

President Vladimir Putin of Russia warned of the potential for a full-scale war in the Middle East and urged restraint. South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned Israeli actions as potential war crimes and filed a complaint with the International Court of Justice. Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India called upon all parties to show maximum restraint and de-escalate tensions.

Russia reiterated the importance of diplomacy to avert a geopolitical crisis on October 24. Brazil convened an emergency UN Security Council meeting on October 10, 2023, to promote international cooperation. Argentina has sent humanitarian supplies and called for restraint.

BRICS presents itself as a viable alternative in advocating for a balanced and just approach to peace. The Kazan Declaration reflects a coalition deeply committed to peace and human rights, underscoring its commitment to balancing global power dynamics and avoiding unilateral military actions.

The BRICS nations' actions serve as a testament to their dedication to fostering peace and providing humanitarian aid in times of crisis, offering a hopeful vision for a more balanced and just international community.
