Brewery in Germany attempting Wiesn experimentation
Stepping into the realm of Bavarian brewing royalty, Giesinger Brew is making waves with their new festival tent at the 2025 Strong Beer Festival. The ambitious CEO, Steffen Marx, has his sights set on the Wiesn — Oktoberfest — within the next 5 years.
The Munich Strong Beer Festivals 2025: A Preparatory Show
On March 6, 2025, Giesinger Brew set the stage for an exciting journey. With Munich's second mayor, Dominik Krause (Greens), billed to tap the first keg, this event serves as a probing rehearsal for the world's largest folk festival.
Munich Beer Roots Run Deep
Giesinger Brew proudly bears the title of Munich brewery since meeting the city's stringent criteria, making them the seventh brand in the city. However, defying the steep hurdles presented by tradition and bureaucracy, Marx dreams of cracking the Wiesn exclusivity.
Battling Age-Old Convention
Accessing the Wiesn isn't a cakewalk for a relatively new entrant. Rich in tradition and encased within a thick blanket of regulations, Oktoberfestonly serves beer from long-established Munich breweries, namely Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Löwenbräu, Paulaner, Spaten, and the State Brewery.
Overhauling the Operating Regulations
Paragraph 51 of the operating regulations sets clear guidelines: Oktoberfest is a traditional Munich event, preserving its time-honored traditions. Only Munich beer from the proven traditional breweries compliant with the Reinheitsgebot can be served. These regulations need to be updated yearly, presenting an obstacle for new players like Giesinger Brew.
Giesinger Brew's Declaration: A Marathon, Not a Sprint
According to a spokesperson, Giesinger Brew could gain entry to the Wiesn without a new city regulation. However, to meet the conditions laid out in the regulations remains Marx's objective. He's well on his way, already rehearsing Oktoberfest-style celebrations on his own turf until he breaks into the big leagues.

Behind the Scenes:
- Historical constraints: Oktoberfest has a rich, respected history, with the six traditional breweries having been present for centuries.
- Compliance with Reinheitsgebot: The traditional purity law, a significant factor in preserving traditional brewing practices in Germany, mandates use of only malted barley, wheat, rye, hops, water, and yeast in the brewing process.
- Permitting and approval: New breweries must garner special permits and approvals from local authorities to participate in Oktoberfest. The selection process is highly exclusive, with no new breweries added in recent years.
- Community and local support: While not a guarantee, demonstrating strong roots and community support could potentially influence the decision-making process for new entrants.
In their quest to join the Wiesn, Giesinger Brew is preparing for the Munich Strong Beer Festivals 2025, hoping to showcase their brewing skills as a prelude to the world's largest folk festival, Oktoberfest. Despite the age-old conventions and regulations, the ambitious CEO, Steffen Marx, is determined to defy the system and crack the Wiesn exclusivity, following the path set by the traditional Munich breweries who have been in operation for centuries.
