Brennan Othmann set for Flames debut after Rangers trade and AHL call-up

Brennan Othmann is set to make his Calgary Flames debut tonight against the Vancouver Canucks. The 23-year-old forward was traded from the New York Rangers' AHL affiliate earlier this month and has since earned a call-up from the Wranglers. For Othmann, this game marks a fresh start—and his 43rd in the NHL overall. Othmann arrived in Calgary on 6 March after a trade that moved him from the Rangers organisation. Though he played 42 NHL games with New York, he has yet to suit up for the Flames at the top level—until now. His recall from the AHL comes after a solid season in the minors, where he recorded 21 points in 36 games.

Head coach Ryan Huska has already noted Othmann's competitive edge and two-way ability, calling him a player who can contribute across all 200 feet of the ice. Othmann will slot in on a line with Tyson Gross and Adam Klapka for his first outing. Familiarity may help, too: he already knows teammate Ryan Strome from their time together in New York and summer training sessions. The winger views the final stretch of the season as an audition. His goal is clear—to prove he belongs on the Flames' roster long-term. Calgary's mix of young talent and experienced veterans could offer him the right environment to do just that.

Tonight's matchup gives Othmann his first chance to show what he can bring to the Flames. If he secures a permanent spot, it will extend his NHL career beyond his previous 42 games with the Rangers. For now, the focus is on making an immediate impact in Calgary.
