Bremen's Wilhelm-Kaisen Bridge reopens early after critical upgrades

Bremen's Wilhelm-Kaisen Bridge has reopened after major reinforcement work finished ahead of schedule. The project aimed to strengthen the structure due to rising traffic loads, which had caused excessive stress on its midspan. Authorities have now lifted key restrictions, easing movement across the key crossing. Construction on the bridge began on August 18, 2025, with an original completion target of Easter 2026. Engineers installed tensioning cables inside the hollow box girders, anchoring them at 16 newly built blocks. This post-tensioning system allows the cables to be tightened, significantly boosting the bridge's load-bearing capacity.

Final inspections were carried out in early April, confirming the work's success. As a result, the general weight limit on the bridge was removed by mid-April. The ban on public transport vehicles passing or meeting on the structure was also rescinded, improving traffic flow. Despite these changes, a 30 km/h (19 mph) speed limit remains in place for all vehicles. The restrictions proved less disruptive than the emergency repairs previously seen on Bremen's Bürgermeister-Smidt Bridge. Traffic on the Wilhelm-Kaisen Bridge had already surged by 15-20% after its October 2024 reopening, with daily volumes reaching 25,000-28,000 vehicles by early 2026.

The bridge now supports higher traffic loads without the previous weight and movement restrictions. The completed upgrades ensure safer and smoother travel for the thousands of vehicles crossing daily. Authorities will continue monitoring the structure under the remaining speed limit.
