Bremen's Senator Ulrich Maurer to step down by year-end.
Bremen's Longest-Serving Minister of Interior Steps Down
Ulrich Maurer, the longest-serving Minister of Interior in Bremen's history, has announced his decision to step down from his position at the end of the year. The news was made public in a letter to the state executive committee and the SPD faction in Bremen, and the Minister's decision letter is in the possession of dpa.
Maurer, a lawyer who studied law in Marburg and Bremen, has been a pillar of the Bremen Senate for many years. Before his current position, he took over the office of Minister of the Interior from Willi Lemke (SPD) in 2008. Prior to this, he worked in the office of the Senator for Justice and Constitution, later becoming State Secretary, before becoming Minister himself.
Born in the Rhineland-Palatinate town of Höhr-Grenzhausen in July 1951, Maurer has been a dedicated public servant for many years. He joined the SPD and has served in various administrative roles within Bremen before becoming Interior Senator. His tenure is notable for a focus on internal security, police affairs, and integration policies within the city-state of Bremen.
In his letter, Maurer cited his age (74) as a reason for stepping down and making way for a successor. The handover process and the identity of the successor have not been publicly announced yet. The new Minister of the Interior will have until the next election in spring 2027 to establish their own priorities and gain the trust of the people of Bremen.
The Minister's spokesman confirmed the news to dpa, and the "Weser Kurier" was the first to report on Maurer's decision to step down. Maurer is married and has two children.
The state election in Bremen is scheduled for spring 2027, and the new Minister of the Interior will have to navigate the political landscape of the city-state in the lead-up to the election. Maurer's departure marks the end of an era in Bremen's politics, and the city-state will be looking forward to a new chapter under a new Minister of the Interior.
The decision to step down by Bremen's longest-serving Minister of Interior, Ulrich Maurer, has led to a vacancy in policy-and-legislation, particularly in matters of internal security, police affairs, and integration. The impending state election in spring 2027 will see a new politician navigate the political landscape of Bremen, marking a shift in the city-state's general-news landscape.
