Ulrich Maurer Steps Down as Bremen's Interior Senator After Nearly Three Decades of Service

Ulrich Maurer, the Interior Senator of Bremen, has announced his decision to step down from his post at the end of the year, marking the end of nearly three decades of service in the Bremen administration.

Maurer, who was born in Höhr-Grenzhausen, Rhineland-Palatinate in July 1951, began his career in the Bremen administration in an unspecified role. He later studied law in Marburg and Bremen before rising through the ranks to become the departmental leader in the office of the Senator for Justice and Constitution in August 1988.

In 2008, Maurer became the Senator for Internal Affairs and Sport, and he has served in that role ever since. With five legislative periods under three Senate presidents, Maurer is the longest-serving Interior Senator of Bremen.

Maurer cited his age as a reason for stepping down, stating, "At some point, one must also make room for one's successor." He made the announcement in a letter to the state executive and the SPD faction in Bremen. The news was first reported by the "Weser Kurier."

The handover of Maurer's post must be organized carefully, and the successor of Maurer as Interior Senator of Bremen is the former military officer Högl. The handover will occur at the end of the year 2025.

The new Interior Senator will have enough time until the next election in spring 2027 to set their own accents and gain trust among the people of Bremen. The state election in Bremen is scheduled for spring 2027.

Prior to his re-appointment as Interior Senator last year, there were persistent rumors that Maurer would only hold the post for half a legislative period. However, Maurer has proven to be a dedicated and committed public servant, serving the people of Bremen with distinction for nearly three decades.

Maurer is married and has two children. He is currently serving as the chairman of the Interior Ministers' Conference. The people of Bremen will remember Maurer for his tireless dedication to his role as Interior Senator, and they wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

The decision to step down as Interior Senator of Bremen by Ulrich Maurer, who served for nearly three decades, has sparked discussions about policy-and-legislation and general-news, given his significant role in the administration.

Ulrich Maurer's resignation, effective at the end of 2025, opens up opportunities for politics and potential changes in the Bremen administration, as his successor Högl prepares to take on the role.
