Bremen senator, Maurer, to step down prematurely due to reaching advanced years.
Eva Hoegl Set to Become Bremen's Interior Senator
Ulrich Maurer, the current Interior Senator of Bremen, is stepping down from his position at the end of this year, paving the way for Eva Hoegl to take over. Hoegl, a former parliamentary commissioner for the armed forces and a member of the SPD, is being considered as a potential successor.
Maurer has held the position since 2008, taking over from Willi Lemke. He is known for his controversial statements and actions throughout his tenure, which have caused stirs in Bremen politics. Some of his notable controversies include a heated argument with the German Football League about the costs of police deployments at high-risk games, and accusations from the Bremen CDU that he was not able to control clan crime. In 2023, Maurer faced pressure to justify his attendance at an Israel-critical event.
In contrast, Hoegl, who is set to succeed Maurer by the end of 2025, is considered more left-liberal. She is a member of the organization "Pro Asyl," which advocates for asylum seekers. This marks the first time a woman would hold the Interior Senator position in Bremen.
Hoegl grew up in Bad Zwischenahn and served as deputy chair of the SPD Bundestag faction, overseeing internal and legal affairs, before serving as Wehrbeauftragte, the Military Ombudsperson of the German Bundestag, from 2020 until May 2025. She was not renominated for the position in 2025.
Regarding her political positioning, while Maurer was seen as stricter on migration and internal security issues, Hoegl is considered more left-liberal. No verified controversial statements by Eva Hoegl have been reported as of August 2025. However, the Senate would also be gaining a politician with some controversial statements in the past.
If Eva Hoegl were to succeed Ulrich Maurer, the Senate would be gaining a strong personality with considerable experience. Maurer wants to hand over the position in time for his successor to make sufficient impact before the scheduled state election in Bremen in the spring of 2027.
