Bremen Mayor, Bovenschulte, acknowledges and greets a youth contingent hailing from the Odessa region
Youth Group from Odessa, Ukraine, Enjoys Relaxation Holiday in Bremen
A group of 18 young people from the Odessa region in Ukraine have been enjoying a much-needed break in Bremen, Germany, thanks to the efforts of cross-cultural support and solidarity.
Organized by the initiative "Europa Prykhystok" and the German-Ukrainian cultural association Unity Center UA, the relaxation holiday provides a supportive environment for Ukrainian youth affected by ongoing difficulties, likely linked to the war and displacement.
The Unity Center UA, founded out of necessity to support Ukrainians, especially amid recent challenges, has been at the forefront of facilitating these engagements to nurture understanding and offer respite to those impacted by conflict.
The Free Hanseatic City of Bremen has been in cooperation with the Odessa region since June 2023. The stay of the youth group in Bremen was made possible by donations from private individuals, companies, and institutions, including BBG and Partner GmbH, Chancen für Kinder foundation, Bündnis für die Ukraine, Aktion Hilfe für Kinder, and ASB Bremen. The board of the Friedehorst Foundation is offering favorable conditions for the group's accommodation.
Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte welcomed the youth group on July 19, 2024, and expressed his hope that the relaxation holiday would offer the young people a little normality amidst the unimaginable suffering they are experiencing due to the Russian attack on Ukraine. During the tour, the mayor answered questions from the group, engaging in lively conversation about various topics, including how one becomes a mayor, shared passion for music, and balancing a political career with family life.
The group visited the town hall and were shown the representative rooms of the World Heritage site by Mayor Bovenschulte. The youth group, internally displaced from the east of Ukraine, have all experienced personal loss in the war, with their fathers having died, currently at the front, or severely injured.
The program for the relaxation holiday, developed and implemented by the Unity Center UA, focuses on trauma processing through therapeutic and sporting measures. Such initiatives aim at cultural exchange, psychological relief, and community building between the Ukrainian guests and the local German population.
The relaxation holiday in Bremen is a reflection of the broader mission of Unity Center UA to foster Ukrainian-German ties and support Ukrainians abroad. Instagram sources highlight cultural and commemorative events, such as Ukraine's Independence Day celebrations in Bremen, which align with the purpose of organizing such relaxation holidays.
