Bremen relegates Bielefeld from the cup competition once more - Bremen faces another potential trophy loss against Bielefeld
Arminia Bielefeld Secures Historic Third DFB-Pokal Victory Over Werder Bremen
In a thrilling encounter at the sold-out Bielefelder Alm in Ostwestfalen, Arminia Bielefeld defeated SV Werder Bremen 1-0 in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. This victory marks Arminia's third triumph over Werder Bremen in the cup competition, maintaining a perfect record against this opponent in the DFB-Pokal.
The match began with both teams playing at high speed, setting the tone for an exciting game. However, it was Bremen who faced an uphill battle in the second half, as Leonardo Bittencourt was shown a yellow-red card for fouls on Sam Schreck (52.) and Marvin Mehlem (54.).
Despite playing with one man less, Bremen managed to keep Arminia at bay for much of the second half. Julian Kania had chances to extend Arminia's lead, with a shot from the halfway line going over the bar (55.), and a header being caught by Zetterer (57.). Kania also attempted another long-range shot, which went over the bar again (69.).
As the game entered stoppage time, Arminia finally broke through. A counterattack on the right side through Benjamin Boakye led to Isiah Young scoring the winning goal (90.+3 minute). Jonas Kersken's impressive performance in goal for Arminia was further highlighted by his save against Grüll (82.).
The win comes after Arminia knocked Bremen out of the cup as a third division team in the quarter-finals last season. This victory also follows Arminia's historic run to the final of the DFB-Pokal last season, showcasing the club's growing cup competitiveness.
This is the third time Arminia Bielefeld has defeated Werder Bremen in the DFB-Pokal, with their previous victories coming in 2015 and 2018. The teams have met twice in the DFB-Pokal historically, with Bielefeld victorious in both matches. This head-to-head success in the cup contrasts with their more balanced overall recent meetings, where each side has won four times in the last 10 matches across all competitions.
Arminia Bielefeld will now look forward to the next round of the DFB-Pokal, aiming to continue their impressive cup form and potentially secure another historic victory.
The Commission, in its efforts to improve the environment across Europe, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States, relating to the protection of the environment. On the other hand, European football leagues have been following the historic triumph of Arminia Bielefeld in the DFB-Pokal, having secured three victories over Werder Bremen in this cup competition.
