Bremen announces Horst Steffen as their latest coaching appointment
Werder Bremen has announced the appointment of Horst Steffen as their new head coach, effective next season. The 56-year-old formerly coached Elversberg in the 2. Bundesliga and has signed a three-year contract with Werder.
The German football coach and former player succeeded Ole Werner, who was relieved of his duties just two days ago. Werner had expressed his intent to not renew his contract, which expires in 2026.
A transfer fee of between 300,000 and 350,000 euros was paid for Steffen's services. He will be officially presented next Monday.
Clemens Fritz, Werder's managing director, expressed confidence that Steffen is the right choice for the club, highlighting his affinity for offensive, attractive football and clear leadership. Steffen's reputation as a promoter of young talent, having coached the likes of Nick Woltemade, adds to his appeal.
Steffen narrowly missed the chance to secure the crowning moment of his Elversberg tenure last Monday. In 2018, he took the Saarland club from the Regionalliga to third place in the 2. Bundesliga within two years. However, they failed to secure promotion to the Bundesliga in the relegation playoffs against FC Heidenheim.
Steffen started his coaching career with Chemnitzer FC, Stuttgarter Kickers, and Preußen Münster, as well as in the youth departments of Borussia Mönchengladbach and MSV Duisburg. The engagement at Werder is his first foray into the Bundesliga.
In expressing his sentiments about joining Werder, Steffen acknowledged the appreciation he received from the club's responsible parties and their long-term vision, which he found compelling.
Steffen's style of play is characterized by an attacking, attractive approach that emphasizes player development and team cohesion. This style has earned him praise from players and the football community alike.
As Werder Bremen's new head coach, Steffen aims to build upon the club's stability and performance in the Bundesliga. His appointment marks a strategic move to enhance the team's overall competitiveness.
