Breakthrough in nuclear energy as molten salt reactor fuel production begins

The Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment (MCRE) marks a world first. It is the only project testing chloride-based molten salt fuel in a fast reactor. The US Department of Energy, Southern Company, TerraPower, and CORE POWER are leading the effort.

The MCRE project is now moving from development to full-scale testing. If successful, the technology could provide a new source of clean energy by the next decade. The first commercial reactors, based on these findings, are expected to launch in the 2030s.
